Flammpanzer 38 wreck - Finished

Hello gents,

A peak on a current project in the works, a K.O. Jagdpanzer 38 (flamethrower) destroyed some time after Operation Nordwind. The vehicle is pushed off the road to make way for the advancing Allies. The vignette will include a US tank crew viewing the wreck from the road.

Painting is 90% done and thereafter work will begin on the vignette. There are still some areas that need work to tie in with the groundwork after the model is placed in the scene. Painting was a real challenge for me. I had my share of frustration, struggled at times but when I finally came through; I learned a lot. I hope this experience and knowledge gained will better prepare me for future projects.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks for looking and have a good weekend.

cheers,
Julian

Julian,

Impressive work man! Is it possible that I've seen this one on an other forum? These vignetes are allways interesting because of the dynamics. Good job on the burnd out vehicle. I'm looking forward to see the groundwork! Keep up the good work mate!

Cheers

Hi Julian, I saw this little gem before on your Blog.
Really nice little burnt out panzer.
I like the rustied look, because metal has a tendency to rust very quikly when being heated. Very convincing paintjob.
Just look at an metalplate that has been subject to a blowtorch.

Cheerio, Arno

Hi Julian,
Good to see you back on this build! The burned effects are very good, I like the sooty apearance.
Please keep updating, Jan 🙂

Hello Julian,

Well, I guess you might call this a nice piece of modelling. As you can see, I like understatements too 😉
In my opinion, you've caught the look of a burned-out vehicle quite well, if I'm allowed to mention one little critical note, I would say that the rubber tires on the roadwheels and returnrollers, as far as still present, did stand out the fire quite unharmed - or is it steel?

But still, I do like your modelling (and painting) skills and I'm looking forward to the rest!

Regards,
Kanne

Hi Julian,

Man, where do you get it from...I really dig the burnt-out look (really comes close to most burnt-out cars I've encountered and the steep angle. The effect, once finished, should be captivating.

Keep us posted 😉

Thanks very much for the remarks guys. Glad you liked it! This project has been on going since the start of the year as part of a group build over at Mig forum. I continued working on it after the deadline was over. I hope to finish the vignette as soon as I could possibly to work on other projects! Working on this subject has got me a liking for building abadoned/destroyed vehicles. After this, I just want to weather something less intense 😉

Boris: I posted this project on some forums as well so yeah it's possible
you have seen it elsewhere.

Kanne: Sharp eyes! I forgot about the rubber return roller! I'll make the
amendments later on.

Thanks everyone. It means a lot to me!

cheers,
Julian

Hi Julian

This is very convincing to me, i have a mate that recycles wrecked cars, amongst them are some burnt out ones, and this just looks the same way
spot on, nice piece of work.

Cheers Ronald

Thanks for your thoughts guys!

Work is eating my modelling time lately but I'm trying to get some work in.

Small update on the base work. The groundwork will be painted/weathered next. Addtional debris, dead vegetation, boxes, papers and stuff will be added on later. The US tank crew will be standing on the edge of the slope viewing the wreck.

This is a favorite part of the vignette making; painting, groundwork details, composing groundwork elements.

Cheers

Julian

Julian, amazing work on the sloping groundwork... very realistic!
I will surely use this as reference for a project I'm currently working on.
Thanks for sharing, Jan 🙂

This is becoming a very interesting diorama.
I like the way you did the cracks in the armoured plate. Not often seen this way but sure as hell very realistic.

As they say in McDonalds adverts: I'm loving it!

Looking forward to seeing the progress on the groundwork, so far it looks very realistic.
You are a brave man, the way you first applied a meticulous camo pattern to the whole tank, only to cover most of it with burn marks... I tip my hat to you sir!

Thanks for the comments and thoughts guys!

If any of you are interested, this is how I did the groundwork.
The groundwork is made up of real sand, white glue/water mixture, some paint i.e. XF-52 Flat earth (to add different tones to groundwork) this is optional at this stage. When mixed, the groundwork should be of a lumpy consistency, not too wet and not too dry. This is so it will be easier to apply and shape the groundwork.

After groundwork is applied, I added roots, dead branches, tree barks, debris, accessories, leaves (spices). I also added more leaves/branches over the accessories like the missing wheel and the opened box to suggest the objects have been sitting there for a while.

When the final look of the groundwork is set, some paint and weathering the groundwork to tie in with the vehicle's finish. 😀

Julian

Hello guys,

Hope everyone are enjoying the holidays. Real life interrupted the project for quite a while but I'm still working hard to finish this one. Most of the groundwork accessories have been painted and weathered. The hetzer is in its temporary final resting place, with a bit of integration left before fixing it down to the groundwork. The paper litter and the discarded zeltbahn were made from Magic Sculpt.
Engine hatch and side fenders will be added after the vehicle is fixed.

I'm thinking about adding some snow melting from the previous winter. What do you think?

After this it's on to working the figure.

Cheers
Julian

great going!

Hi there Julian,

Great going! Love your groundwork!

For a future diorama I'd like to know how you made the ice on top of your dio...(if you're willing to tell me).

About adding the melting snow: to my personal taste the groundwork is (a bit too) dark, monotone. Which is understandable because it's winter (right?) and most of the discarded items are burned.

So yes, adding just a little snow could add even more depth and diversion.

But don't mind me... If I only could build half the dio you're showing here, I'd be a happy man 🙂 .

greetings, Richard.

Julian,

great work, very realistic 😱 .
A very good scattering of all the "junk" lying around. How do you plan that, if you even plan it at all?
Love the zeltbahn, love the ice on top even more.
Let us in on your secret on the ice.

Greetz
Axel

Richard, I think I'll add traces of snow/slush on the road, on and around some of the objects. I agree with you on the snow - it may help break up the monotony of the ground and add diversity to the scene.

Axel, Richard - I'll explain the ice making in a later post. There's no ice added yet to the vignette.

Jacco, thanks for the comment.

Cheers
Julian

ice, ice baby....

Hello Julian,

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought the white "stuff" on top of your dio (best seen on pictures #1 & #2) represented frozen ice? If not, what is it?

greetings, Richard.

Hello everyone, hope you all are well and modelling.

It's about time for an update on this long project. Yup... I know I took my own time but I'm glad it's done! To conclude, here is the completed vignette.

Hope you enjoyed the work so far.

cheers
Julian

Hi Julian,

Excellent work, and thanks for sharing it with us. That Alpine figure is well painted too and complements the scene.
Some more close-up photos please?

Cheers, MartinD

Hello Julian,

Nice finish! It came out very nice! I still love the look of the suspention hanging backwards. Did you make the ash by using pigments? The figure looks good too. (like he has killed the bastard with his Machine-pistol 😉 )
Personally I would have made the edge of this vigenette a bit lower. Now it's a bit higher than the scene. (I did that too in the past 😉 )
I hope to see more of your work!

Best regards,

Really splendid! The groundwork, wheatering, everything is absolutely realistic.

Thanks for sharing, I hope to learn from it 😀
